Muritala Afolabi, an Iree, Osun State resident, set himself on fire on Friday and suffered critical injuries.
However, as Muritala’s body was being burned by the fire, several people heard his cries and came to his aid.
He was admitted after being transported to a private hospital in Iree.
The vulcaniser Muritala, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on Sunday from his hospital bed, claimed that his wife’s emotional abuse and frustration were the reasons he chose to end his life.
The 30-year-old craftsman claimed that after they wed in July 2022, his wife started abusing and cursing him, making his life difficult.
“I just considered ending it,” he added. I bought fuel at a petrol station that Friday, went to a forest outside Baptist High School in Iree, and lit myself ablaze there.
“When I considered everything I was going through, I made the decision to take my own life. I had lost hope because of my wife’s constant curses and poverty. I recently got married to her in July of this year.
“Some individuals raced to the scene after hearing me when the fire was consuming my corpse. They saved me, and they took me to the hospital.
When reached by our reporter over the phone, Ifedolapo, Muritala’s wife, denied cursing the man.
I don’t know why he chose to kill himself, the woman replied. His wife I am. I am yet to born a child for him.
