One Magaji Sani, age 25, of Sabon Garin Takanebu, Miga Local Government Region, drowned in surface water in the Gujungu town area of the state, according to the Jigawa State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps on Saturday.

In a statement confirming the tragedy, the command’s spokesman, Adamu Shehu, revealed that Sani drowned while swimming in the lake alongside other swimmers during a rainfall.

Shehu continued, “Attempts by the victim’s fellow swimmers to save him proved fruitless until NSCDC staff at Gujungu outpost called local divers to the spot to aid in the rescue attempt.”

“Unfortunately, following frantic efforts, his corpse was finally rescued from the water but certified dead,” he wrote in the statement. His body was then returned to his family.
