Queen Elizabeth II’s record-breaking reign is gone. She was the only monarch most of her subjects had ever known. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor passed away on Thursday at her Scottish castle, Balmoral Castle. She was 96.Around 6.30 p.m., the palace released a statement with a black border. The King and the Queen Consort will stay at Balmoral through today evening and go back to London tomorrow, according to local time, after the Queen passed away peacefully there this afternoon.
Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, her 73-year-old eldest child and heir, ascended to the throne right away after her passing. Camilla, his wife, was crowned queen consort.
