The uniformed protesting officers gathered at Osogbo Grammar School, marched through Oke-Fia, Alekuwodo, and then stormed the Ola-Iya flyover to air their complaints.
Constable Tijani Adewale, who spoke on behalf of the protesting police officers, said that they are dedicated to their work despite not receiving pay, and that three of his coworkers have died while carrying out their responsibilities.
He bemoaned that because they couldn’t take care of their families, commercial tricyclists and motorcyclists had stolen their wives. He said: “We have visited with legislators and officials in the state, but there has been no progress. Three people died in Ikire and one in Iree. These persons passed away while performing their jobs.
“Despite not receiving a single cent in compensation, we are incredibly obedient. Tricycle and Okada riders have taken our spouses because we are unable to care for them due to underpaid allowances.
Olawale Olokode, the state’s police commissioner, gave them the order to end the protest when he subsequently joined them at the Ola-Iya bridge. He told them that the relevant authority would step in and that the matter would be investigated.
“You are embarrassing the force with your protest,” he said. “You should have directed your complaints to the proper parties. With your protests, you are upsetting the tranquility in the community. We anticipate you to uphold a high standard of discipline when you are donning this clothing as a force man.
