Jeremiah Okorodudu, a former Nigerian boxer, has passed away following a battle with a partial stroke.
Adenike Okorodudu, the wife of the ex-pugilist, confirmed his demise to TheCable on Wednesday night.
Okorodudu, who was widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished boxers during the 1980s, passed away at a private hospital in Surulere, Lagos.
“Jerry endured significant suffering. He had been dealing with partial stroke and diabetes for the past two years,” she revealed.
“His leg was scheduled for amputation on Saturday, but he passed away tonight at the hospital in Lawanson, Surulere, where we had taken him.
“I did everything I could to raise awareness and gather support to prevent what happened tonight, but he has now departed.
“It is truly heartbreaking. We are currently making arrangements to take him to the mortuary. My husband is gone.”
The 64-year-old, who had also battled foot ulcers in recent years, competed in the men’s middleweight category at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
He achieved a bronze medal at the 1982 Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane, Australia.
Furthermore, Okorodudu clinched a gold medal at the 1979 National Sports Festival in Ibadan.
