Last Friday, a tragic incident occurred as bandits attacked the convoy of former governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, resulting in the death of a police officer. The attack took place in Ihube, within the Okigwe community along the Okigwe-Enugu expressway.
Senator Okorocha expressed his shock at the audacity of the attack on his convoy and confirmed the killing of the police officer, describing it as an unfortunate event. He disclosed this during a recent gathering in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state, which was held to celebrate the birthday of Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Samdaddy), the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the upcoming November 11 governorship polls in Imo State.
Senator Okorocha explained that he was returning from Enugu after attending the burial ceremony of the wife of former senate president, Ken Nnamani. He mentioned that the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, had provided vehicles and security personnel to accompany him and his team to Imo State for the burial ceremony of Emeka Ihedioha’s mother.
According to Senator Okorocha, the attack occurred after he had already concluded his attendance at the funeral in Mbaise. The convoy had dropped him off at his Spilbat mansion in Owerri and was on its way back to Enugu when the bandits struck.
Expressing his frustration, Senator Okorocha highlighted the irony of being safe in Enugu only for his convoy to be attacked in his own state. The bandits mistakenly targeted the convoy, presuming that he was inside one of the vehicles, and tragically killed a security agent.
He vented his anger, stating, “I am angry. I’m very angry because I spent two days in Enugu and nothing happened to me, but it is in my own state that the convoy released to me by the governor of Enugu State (a very good man), to attend the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother at Mbaise, was attacked and one policeman killed. What is happening in Imo State makes me angry. Many people who are running to govern Imo State are not capable, but I have seen one man who the cap fits. When it is time I will speak.”
One of Senator Okorocha’s security aides, speaking anonymously to the Daily Sun, revealed that the convoy, consisting of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), a bus, and a Hilux van, had sustained extensive damage from the bullets fired by the attackers. Additionally, two other security agents were kidnapped but were later released on the same day.
