Governor Umaru Bago of Niger state has granted clemency to 80 inmates across different correctional centers. The decision, made in commemoration of the 2023 Democracy Day, was announced by Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
Usman stated that the governor, considering factors such as old age, ill health, and good behavior, has also authorized the immediate payment of fines for the pardoned inmates. The recommendation for this action came from the State Advisory Council on prerogative of mercy.
He appealed to the released inmates to refrain from engaging in activities that may lead them back to correctional facilities. Instead, he encouraged them to utilize their newfound freedom by engaging in productive ventures and taking advantage of empowerment opportunities.
The SSG further urged the people of Niger to utilize this period for introspection on their role in fostering peace and supporting good governance. He called on them to rally behind the administration’s programs aimed at accelerating development in the state, assuring them that the government is committed to delivering the benefits of democracy.
Emphasizing the importance of hope and commitment, Usman implored the residents of the state not to succumb to despair. He urged them to renew their dedication to strengthening democratic institutions and cultivating values such as tolerance, patriotism, and discipline.
Acknowledging the state’s security challenges, the SSG assured the public that the government is deeply concerned and fully prepared to address the situation.
