President Bola Tinubu has received an appeal to designate a Southerner as the next Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), replacing Abdulrasheed Bawa. The request emphasizes the importance of selecting the next EFCC chairman based on merit, competence, and a proven track record in the fight against corruption.
In a statement issued by Emmanuel Onwubiko, the National Coordinator of Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), it was suggested that the nationalisation of the EFCC Chairmanship is necessary to ensure equal representation from all regions of Nigeria. HURIWA expressed concerns over the consistent appointment of individuals from the North to the position, which has created the perception that the role is exclusively allocated to the North, thereby depriving equally capable individuals from the South of the opportunity to contribute to anti-corruption efforts.
The statement stressed the significance of such a decision in promoting unity, inclusivity, and a balanced Nigeria. It further advocated for the appointment of a candidate from the southern region as the next EFCC Chairman to ensure a fair distribution of power and to demonstrate the competence of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Recognizing President Tinubu as a prominent leader known for his commitment to fairness, justice, and equity, HURIWA urged him to exhibit the same principles by appointing a candidate from the South as the next EFCC Chairman.
