According to a reliable source within the Department of State Services (DSS), there are plans underway to conduct searches at the home and workplace of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank. This action is part of an ongoing investigation being carried out by the DSS.
The source, who spoke to Punch, disclosed that Emefiele is unlikely to be released in the near future. The DSS has had their eye on him for quite some time, and his arrest represents an escalation in their efforts to bring him to justice.
The source stated, “Emefiele has been under the surveillance of the DSS for a considerable period. Now that he has been apprehended, he will be held in our headquarters overnight and is not expected to be released anytime soon. Furthermore, it is highly probable that his residence and office will be subjected to search as part of the ongoing investigation.”
Previously, the DSS had attempted to obtain an arrest warrant for Emefiele but failed to present sufficient evidence to convince Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.
The DSS’s investigation into Emefiele encompasses allegations of terrorism financing, mismanagement of Nigeria’s social investment program, and the Anchor Borrowers’ Scheme, among other offenses.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Emefiele’s residence in Maitama, FCT appeared conspicuously vacant. From noon until around 3 pm, reporters present at the scene observed no security operatives or significant activity in the vicinity.
While the security personnel at the CBN headquarters remained vigilant, there were no indications of the presence of the DSS. This contradicts earlier incidents this year when a team of policemen were seen at Emefiele’s home and DSS operatives were reported to have invaded the CBN office.
