Simon Ekpa, a prominent Biafra agitator and the Prime Minister of Biafra Republic in Exile (BRGIE), has called on the Department of State Security (DSS) to allow two doctors to have access to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Last week, the DSS denied an independent medical team access to Kanu, despite the medical unit of the DSS having cleared the two doctors who intended to treat Kanu’s deteriorating ear condition.
In a statement posted on his official Twitter handle, Ekpa condemned the actions of some expelled members of IPOB who sought to obstruct the process. He clarified that the doctors’ visitation, for which Barrister Aloy Ejimakor wrote a letter of introduction, was part of the broader effort to arrange ear surgery and urgent medical care for Nnamdi Kanu. Ekpa emphasized that Kanu himself had chosen these doctors, not Ejimakor or other individuals, and that this was not the first time such arrangements had been made. He mentioned a previous incident in August of the previous year when another doctor selected by Kanu was also denied access at the last minute. Despite the challenges, Ejimakor had managed to obtain an independent medical opinion, which proved crucial.
Ekpa further clarified that the expelled individuals from IPOB, namely Chinasa Nworu, Chika Edozie, and others, were spreading false information and engaging in a hate campaign against Ejimakor and Kanu’s family. He highlighted that the doctors did not go to the DSS for surgery but to examine Kanu and provide recommendations for a surgery to be conducted at a hospital chosen by Kanu and with doctors selected by him. Ekpa stressed that the expelled members of the Directorate of State (DOS) had no authority to choose doctors for Kanu, as it was solely his prerogative.
Ekpa expressed concern that the actions of the DOS and Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor in blocking the two doctors’ access would further delay the surgery and impede Kanu’s health. The doctors’ recommendations could potentially be used to demand Kanu’s release for the surgery, depending on their advice. Ekpa called on the DSS to immediately readmit the doctors and facilitate their visitation to Kanu, as they were his chosen doctors and he had confidence in them.
