Nigeria’s Iyiazi wins gold and establishes a new record

  • Alam takes bronze in the women’s F55-57 shot put team Nigeria grabbed another medal yesterday at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, when Eucharia Iyiazi and Ugochi Alam took gold and bronze in the women’s F55-57 Shot Put final.


Iyiazi won the gold medal for Nigeria by throwing a new Commonwealth Games record of 10.03 metres.

Iyiazi won gold medals in both the women’s Shot Putt F57/F58 event and the women’s Discus throw F57/F58 event at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China.

Iyiazi established the world and Paralympic records in shot put and discus at the Beijing Paralympics.

Alam, for her part, won bronze with a throw of 9.30m, putting Team Nigeria first and third. Arlette Fokoa of Cameroon won the silver medal.

Esther Isa and Temitope Adeshina finished ninth and tenth in the women’s High Jump final, respectively.

Both athletes leapt the same height of 1.81 metres, which was insufficient for a podium finish.

Eucharia Iyiazi’s gold medal yesterday put Team Nigeria up to seventh place in the medal standings, with eight gold, three silver, and seven bronze medals.
